So after about 6 weeks our sound replacement project is finally finished! Overall it was a pretty great success and I learned a lot working on it. I'm sure you're all eager to see it so with making you wait any longer here it is!
It took a lot of recording and a lot of editing, I think overall I spent about 6 hours in the 8024 recording different take of dialogue and getting all the equipment and actors sorted out. Overall though it worked out well the only major setback I encountered was how many people showed up to my first dialogue recording session. I invited everyone I could think of who would be interested in helping me record (roughly 6 or so people) and unfortunately only two of them showed up. So I spent that session perfecting my setup and signal flow and got the guy to record all of the male lines in the video so I at least had something that could fill in the gaps incase I couldn't get anything else. If you remember however I talked about risk management in the original project explanation and I foresaw this happening as the below screen shot proves.
This is why these documents are so important to creating a project. If you plan for these things to go wrong and have mitigations in place projects go much smoother. Our mitigation worked really well, we booked our studios in advance and had backups planned in case we didn't get as much done as we planned. So since I started recording early I had time to rerecord lines the following week which made the video that much better. All in allI was happy with how the dialogue turned out as it was my baby for the project. The recording session went well, maybe a little bit rusty with the console but there weren't any problems that took more than a few minutes to solve. All the takes I got were super clean and the mic choice worked great giving me clean dialogue to edit. As far as editing went I had a good idea as to how to start thanks to the research I've done in the past and all the editing I've done on my podcasts. Obviously there were a few things I could improve on like more dynamic uses of effects, and more creativity with reverb but in the end I was more than happy with the lines I captured.
The team dynamic was quite well rounded after we recorded all the foley together we each took an aspect of the project and got to work, Tom took foley and sound FX, Rylan took the music and I focused on the dialogue. This worked really well but the only thing i fear is how much we each stuck to our strengths. I've spent most of my time doing dialogue in the past months and haven't touched much music or synth work in a while so sticking to ours strengths was a great way to make our project really cool but I'm worried about how much I actually learned. When it came to putting everything together the week it was due everyone just bounced their session and added it to the master. I honestly have no idea how the music was made or any of the processes that went into creating something like that. I saw some of the work Tom did working with the foley and adding synth layers to enhance the final sounds but I feel if I had to do the same job it would take me a lot longer and I would probably make more mistake. I'm definitely keeping this in mind for my next project and want to be as involved as I can be in all aspects of making it.
Another aspect of the project we could have handled better was our feedback. Like i said earlier we didn't bring the whole session together until the day it was due so we had very little time to balance and mix all the levels and some of the sound effects were missing as well. That's ok because it was a draft that was due but if we had spent the time to do it a week or so earlier we would've had a much cleaner draft and some more accurate feedback. The same goes for our final mix, after the feedback we received from our coworkers and mentor we went away again and handled our own missing elements. For me it was fixing one line in the whole video which took me all of 2 minutes to correct. After that I didn't touch the project again as one of the other members had the master session and was doing the main final mix themselves. We didn't do it together as a group because our schedules didn't match up at all which was really unfortunate. I'm still really proud of the final result but I feel like I could've had a more direct hand in making the end result. When it comes to future projects I will keep this in mind and be a hands on as I can be hoping to learn from my other members as much as I can.
