Project NosVRtu: Introduction

Yeah I know what you're thinking... I don't know why I keep finding projects about Dracula either... Seriously thought I'm really excited to introduce my new project NosVRtu. NosVRtu is a Virtual Reality game set in Dracula's castle, you explore the environment around you can uncover secrets and find things to play around with. It's a project made by 2 animation students I'm working with and they've already created the textures and location I have the job of adding a soundscape to bring it to life! I won't be alone however I'll be working with a friend of mine called Ryan (link to his blog here). Together we're tackling the music, atmosphere, foley and everything in between including the most challenging part implementing it into the actual game. As with every project I start the first step is planning, booking, research and general preparation.

I always start with a asset list so we know what needs to be done, a milestone table to keep us on track and a risk assessment to make sure we are ready for things to go wrong. Like I've stressed before these document are lifesavers and everyone thinking of starting a project like this needs to have these in mind before starting.

This project is going to be quite challenging, I knew it from the second I accepted it. The most worrying thing for me is working in a new program like Unreal. Unreal is similar to Unity but more like it's big brother. This engine is used on big games like Fortnite and heaps of other AAA game titles. It's an industry standard to know how it works and I've never touched it before which is why research is my biggest goal right now. I've found a few videos that explain the basics of audio implementation which has got me started but I feel like a lot of my time on this project is going to be spent learning the basics. Normally this wouldn't be too bad but with the deadline we have (roughly 2 weeks) it's going to be tight to say the least.

On top of learning implementation we're also making an ambient sound track and menu music. For inspiration I'm going with Gothic waltz music such as the below video.

The VR environment is kind of serious but also lighthearted and comical for the most part. So I wanted to find some music that wasn't too scary and also not comedic. The above video is a great match I feel and will blog more as I get started on that. That's about it for the introduction there's a lot to talk about and get started with I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for reading.
